Wow what a busy first term in school we have had in the Owl Class! Our topic has been Nursery Rhymes and Stories and we have received lots of letters from the different characters that we have met. Twinkle the Little Star offered to answer all of our questions about space, Incy Wincy Spider sent us on a spider web hunt and the Owl and the Pussycat asked us to make them a list and help pack for their travels!
We made models of Incy Wincy
We have also been exploring our classroom and outside area and discovering all the fun and interesting things that we have available for our learning. We have had some fantastic outdoor learning sessions in Littlewood with Mrs Spicker.
Discovering our classroom
We can be very creative in here
Having fun in Littlewood
Each week we have been answering the register in a different language and learning about that country. We learnt that lots of our favourite traditional tales were written in France and Mia’s mummy came in to make us delicious crepes. We tried lots of different Italian foods and did a penne v spaghetti taste test. We discovered about the Native Americans, made rain sticks and created our own rain dances for Incy Wincy. We played a didgeridoo and made Aboriginal spot paintings when we learnt about Australia. When we learnt about Spain we tried a Spanish omelette and had a flamenco lesson. We learnt about the Hindu and Sikh festival of Diwali and had an Indian feast.
We are discovering other cultures
Recently it was our 50th day of learning in school so to celebrate we had a 1950s party. We came to school dressed in 50s style clothes. We learnt about life in the 1950s and found out lots of interesting, and some surprising, facts about life at that time. In the morning we only had out toys which would have been available in the 1950s, which limited our choice considerably! We made our own 1950s style records. We played Elvis and had lots of dancing. In the afternoon we watched some 1950s children’s television. Then we had more dancing and learnt The Cha Cha Cha. We played some 1950s party games and all had an attempt at hula hooping. We finished off our afternoon with some 1950s party food – jelly and custard.
Partying 1950s style
We have also been busy starting our Phonics and Mathematics sessions, learning lots of skills that will help us this year. We have been working through Phases 1 and 2 of Letters and Sounds and are becoming excellent at recognising, pronouncing and writing our phonemes and graphemes. We are learning to write our names and other words using the correct letter formations. We have been counting and learning lots of number rhymes. We have also been learning all about 2d and 3d shapes and thinking about length.
We know all of these phonemes and are developing our literacy and numeracy skills`
